Yes, because the latex->lyx translator that ships with lyx 1.3.x, reLyX, is
written in perl and none of the current lyx developers either understand
it or want to enhance it.

LyX 1.4 will ship with a totally new translator, tex2lyx, that is written
in C++, is far more robust, far more powerful and has a chance of being
mainatined since we can follow what's going on. It also handles your
particular question out of the box.
