Thanks a lot, Guenther. Seems so though your guesses do not work
for me :( I tried it both on the Lyx/QT2 on X11/Mac and X11/Linux and
on Aqua.

1. In a multi-line equation environment, how can I delete an
overabundant line?

Mark the abundant line from the end of the preciding line to its own end.
Delete.

I tried that before. It will delete the content of the line but not remove the line.

2. I would like to have definitions, lemmas, examples in my standard
article layout. I tried to achieve that by 'include amsmath.inc' but it
seems not to work. Is there an easy solution?

Did you try the "Use AMS" in Format>Document>Packages?

I also tried that before, and it does not work. Do I have to do something
special?

If this doesnot work, I suppose you have to use something like article (AMS),
write your own "AMS-extended" arcticle layout or use ERT.

I would like to modify the standard article so that it always includes Theorem
etc environments as I do need them. I just have not figured out how.
Does anybody know what lines I have to add?

Best wishes,
-Jan
