pdf is a method which produces in _any_ case a pdf file and has only _some_ minor restrictions, e.g. no linebreaks of hyperrefs. It has also some advantages!
What are the advantages? I had much problems with this method in the past.
that you can use psfrag, pstricks, ... and other PostScript related packages without any restriction.
pdflatex creates (lyx)->tex->pdf (best solution, you can embed images
possible with any method
I don't understand that. What other program is able to convert tex to pdf directly?
I meant the images ...
a good alternative is VTeX/Linux, which is free and can handle _any_ graphics format and _any_ PostScript related code.
But VTeX is not free under Win, insn't it?
yes
VTeX seems to be a complete (La)TeX distribution. Is it possible to use only the pdf-producing engine together/for other LaTeX-distributions?
there are only a few packages, e.g. hyperref and pstricks.con, which are patched for use with VTeX. I have a link from VTeX to my TeX-Live installation.
