We have a similar case already: If figures are centered, there is too much
vertical space in 1.3 because the wrong latex environment is used. This is
corrected in 1.4, meaning that the printed output of documents containing
centered figures will change.
Don't misunderstand me, I am not voting for an automatic change, I only want
to say that this problem exists already.
IMHO the only clean way in such cases is to ask the user when he opens an
old document if the old behaviour should be retained (possibly using ERT).
