Try to convert the image to ps (even better eps) and insert with Insert>Graphic. You can clip the image to size directly in the graphic insertion dialog (tab "Ausschnitt" in my German LyX). To get the right values of the view box, I open the *.ps file in gv and it tells me the mouse position in postcript points, so I can move the mouse to the outskirts of my plot and tell LyX the right size.
