Stephen, With an empty LaTeX file, you cannot expect any output! Please have a look at: http://www.comp.leeds.ac.uk/andyr/misc/latex/ and read the section named "Absolute beginners". Then, read the tutorials inside LyX, under the menu Help. Regards, Paul
