For those like me (little knowledge of LaTeX--yet, at least  :), I came
up with a different answer.  

Since LaTeX apparently considers the next column to be the logical
place to move after a pagebreak ...

Create the pagebreak below the paragraph desired, then add a new
following paragraph using a Ctrl-space.  Create a pagebreak below that,
and continue with your writing.

You wind up with a column containing a single space.  :)
