I played with this yesterday but position makes no difference.
You can also try to put it in the date environment, or if all fails to write a custom titlepage not using the Title, Author, Date, ... styles.
I did not try the date environment, but a few of the others.
It is a minor issue and not worth a lot of time. I may use the memoir class for the next batch and that might be more accepting of a graphic insert on the title page.
