The real question is whether you really want italic :) I think
emphasize it what you are looking after in 99% cases. It is like using
a section environment instead of largish bold text with a number in
front.

PS: actually, there exists a font-ital lfun, but it is not bound to
any key. Take that as a sign that you do not need this often enough to
warrant a binding ;)
