An ever fine point -- ask "the list" vs. doing a little simple looking --
which is better, which is appropriate?

I didn't perceive Alexander's answer as unhelpful or obnoxious. When
someone asks a question by admitting that they have absolutely no prior
knowledge and without suggesting that they at least first tried to look
at obvious sources of information (web site, archive of mailing list,
user manual, Google, etc.) then I think that such an answer is
appropriate and in my own experience helpful. Sometimes we forget that
the quickest and most helpful information is just a Google-search away.
This is not to detract from the other answers here; of course they're
helpful (and desired), but sometimes we all just need to be reminded that
"we have the (search) power".
