I also tried removing the \begin, and the entire \end{uline} -- no joy. What can I do?

write into the preamble:

\usepackage{url}
\let\OldUrl\url
\renewcommand\url[1]{\underline{\OldUrl{#1}}}

and use insert->url in the usual way
