that to .eps files?

  I suspect that it's not the size but the format. Your printer driver has to
translate everything into the version of HP's PCL (Page Control Language)
used by that model. I get slow printing on my LaserJet 5 with 12M RAM with
some graphic format.

  If you have ImageMagick installed, use the 'convert' tool to change your
.gif into .eps, then re-insert them in the book. I think you'll be pleasantly
surprised at the difference in printing speed.
