Joachim, Sorry to tell you this: I've tried what you suggested, and unfortunately doesn't work, or at least it's not trivial. You might run LyX alone from a USB stick on any WinXP machine, even as guest, for Ruurd's port is self-contained (though you need to fix reLyX, as it seems to be fatally broken...), and runs smoothly on a 64Mb JumpDrive. However, both ImageMagick and MikTeX depend heavily on registry settings, so it is necessary to install them separately directly on the Hard drives of the machines you're using. You might carry them around in the same jumpdrive, so as to install them beforehand, and then run LyX; however, if you don't have enough privileges, you're likely to be out of luck. Of course, you can edit your files directly in the jumpdrive, but you can't preview or print.
