LyX makes doing so fairly easy on a unix system with RCS installed, just pick file->'version control'-> the current top option and enter a comment if it requests one. Plus if all else fails (a really rare event) you can drop back to the last working checkin. I find this most valuable when I am playing about with concepts I don't yet understand. You may even want to start now if you are not already using it, so that as you experiment to figure out what is wrong, you can have the confidence of being able to get back to a known (albeit broken) state.
