Many thanks to all who responded to my problem. Finally, lyx is working again with Acrobat Reader 7.0.
One problem was that I had updated ghostscript to AFPL version 8.51. Big mistake apparently! Reverting to ESP ghostscript version 7.07 seemed cured my problem. Another contributer was a disc partition with /tmp filling up! Roger
