I am trying to figure out what Lyx's version of the AMS align environment is
supposed to do. According to the AMS documentation, align can be used to
produce either a single column or a multicolumn of relational terms, in which
in each column the terms are aligned by the relational operator (e.g an =
sign). However, when you first create it, Lyx's AMS align produces a 2 element
array. I thought that maybe I needed to add an extra column, that does indeed
align the relational operators but the elements of the term are all right
justified, which makes the right hand side elements all line up very strangely.
Can anyone explain how the Lyx align element is actually *supposed* to be used?
I could not find any actual description of it - the Lyx documentation simply
refers you to AMS's documentatoin of them. (The eqnarray environment appears to
be OK but I heard its not the best one to use).

cheers
