Can you use the latex package to create your document? Ie, does adding
\usepackage{foo}
to your document preamble in the Layout->Document dialog result in you
generating a .dvi file?
The fact that you can't use the TeX information dialog is actually a
problem in the invocation of the shell script that is used to generate the
data. See item 1 in the list of squashed bugs:
