I can understand that... would a "reference card" of the markup on a 
single page be better?

However, in general I don't think the markup is the big problem, but
rather knowing *where* to add the information. And knowing how to
"integrate" the page with all the other pages, so that people can find it
relatively easy.

As for the markup... I think most writers could get by knowing only a 
subset of what is shown below the edit form, i.e. this text:
        http://wiki.lyx.org/PmWiki/EditQuickReference

In fact, I'd say these are the most common things you need to know:

        !! A second level heading

        !!! A third level heading

        An ''emphasized'' word

        * A list item
        * Another list item
        ** A second level list item

and of course how to create a link to another page

        {{LyX/Examples}} - a link to the page LyX/Examples

I'm afraid not... there are actually good reasons for why HTML isn't 
allowed, but I can't remember them right now.
