Yes, I've tried the LyX help files (User's Guide), and the images
(Escher, mobius, etc. ) display fine in the LyX window, but do not
show up when I convert the file to PDF (or to postscript, or to any
output medium).
I get the same behaviour with TeXshop after I convert my LyX to
laTeX, so I'm guessing I have something misconfigured somewhere,
but WHAT???

Not that I can see. Log appended, assuming you're talking
about the LaTeX logfile under the "View" option.
I've deleted and reinstalled LyX 1.3.4, 1.3.6 and 1.3.7.
So you got the same behaviour with the earlier versions after you
reinstalled them?
Yes. It actually started happening first under 1.3.4 with the
control-key patch. I then downloaded 1.3.7 (vanilla) to see if
it was doing it there, and I had 1.3.6 lying around so tried that.
I can see a1.jpg (images available from http://ryuu.ca/lyx)
just fine in the LyX window, but not in the pdf
that it creates. I have tried:
a1.tiff, a1.eps, a1.jpg (same problem)
a1.png (gives error, no info for converting png to eps)
The minimal LyX file that gives me the problem.
