Okay, it sounds like we're having the same problem. It definately goes beyond the reasonable amount of time I would give a program to process previews, and it seems quite random. I had a bunch of subscripts and there were some which just did not turn into instant previews without clicking them, while other ones automatically did. I'll try the scrolling up and down trick - and maybe this is fixed in 1.4?
