The solution is to use the -userdir options. Make a shortcut of lyx
1.4.0 executable, right-click on the short-cut and click properties. If
"paul" is your login, on the "target" field add this at the end of the
path to the lyx executable:
-userdir "C:\Documents and Settings\paul\Application Data\LyX-1.4"
Angus, if you're reading, it might be a good idea to make this the
default as 1.3 and 1.4 have incompatible settings.
