First of all you need to install the different versions of LyX in
different directories. Then you can for instance give the full path to the
LyX binary in order to which LyX you use. Finally, in order to make sure
that LyX doesn't do anything bad to your local configuration directory
(typically ~/.lyx), you can start the new version of lyx with these
arguments:
/usr/local/lyx-1.4/bin/lyx -userdir ~/.lyx-1.4
LyX will then use the directory ~/.lyx-1.4 for your local configuration.
Alternatively, you can of course simply do this:
mv ~/.lyx ~/.lyx-1.3
and then start your old version of lyx with
lyx -userdir ~/.lyx-1.3
