In Lyx 1.3.x, you can do this by typing "\[" and then "\{". Oddly enough, escaping them yourself makes Lyx not escape them!

Simply typing this in doesn't work. The '{' is interpreted as a literal
brace insertion, not as an arg to the \unit macro.
