I am interested in writing text before and after a bibtex citation, like:

Miki,

Perhaps I don't understand your question. The above is exactly how
bibliographic citations work within the text. When you are at the location
where you want to insert the citation, select from the menu, Insert ->
Citation. Choose the citation you want and the format (author, date; number)
and accept the choices in the dialog box.

Is this not what you want to do?

I would also like to combine two articles under the same citation number.

Er, why? That's like having two houses on the same street with the same
address. How does anyone know to which you refer?

Where can I learn about how to do that in lyx (preferably) or in latex?

There's a great pdf on BibTeX (search with Google), and TLC2 has an
extensive chapter on bibliographies.

HTH,

Rich
