Thanks for pointing out the "default" vs. "classic" settings. I didn't
even know those existed. That setting, for me (1.4.2, Qt interface, on
linux), doesn't change the icon placements at all, though -- it just
rearranges where in the top-level menus things like "Reconfigure" get
placed. The thing that determines one or two lines of icons is how wide
the window is. Once they all fit on one line, that's where they go. At
least for me :)
Curtis,
That's true ... for the default UI. The "classic," however, puts them
all
on a single line on my preferred window size. That worked with 1.4.1, but
got lost in 1.4.2.

Hi, Rich,
I didn't roll back to 1.4.1 on my usual computer, but I did happen to
have it installed on another computer. As far as I can tell (disclaimer to
follow), it behaves just the same as the new 1.4.2 does: with either the
classic or default UI file, the icons are split to lie on two lines. The
disclaimer is this: on this other computer (running 1.4.1), the monitor does
a lower resolution, and the LyX window and icons look that much larger
compared to the available workspace. I can't get *one* line of icons with
that computer, because they simple won't all fit on one line.
I suppose I could try to find a way to reduce the icons' size, just to
see if that works.
Might you have a customized layout?
Best wishes, and good luck!
