Open Windows Explorer and navigate to C:\Documents and Settings\<your
login id here>\Application Data\LyX1.4.x and open the file named
'preferences' in a text editor (e.g., notepad). Scroll down until you see

# FILE SECTION ######################################
#
and beneath it type something like
\tempdir_path "C:\Temp"
(changing the directory to whatever you want).
Save the modified file and try to open LyX.
