I suggest using a parbox (and not a tabular as in the thread you've 
found), e.g. enter the following in an ERT box:

\newlength{\authorwidth}%
\settowidth{\authorwidth}{The Widest Author Entry}%
\parbox[t]{\authorwidth}{A Short Author Entry\\
The Widest Author Entry}
