i have LyX 1.4.2 on Mac OS X, 10.4.7, PPC, and everything works
fine. Have you tried deleting the preferences file from ~Library/
App Support/LyX-1.4 and reinstalling?

I also have LyX 1.4.2 on Mac OS X 10.4.7 PPC and everything is
working perfectly for me.
