No, "don't typeset" means that this child document is not typeset at all. It
is the equivalent to LaTeX's \includeonly. It is useful when you want to have
a look at certain chapters only while keeping the references (cross
references etc.) to the suppressed child documents.

It has been removed, because it never worked correctly. It needs to be
reimplemented properly. Menawhile, the documentation is wrong in this point.

To your point:
You can use the package "lscape" (or better "pdflcape", which also supports
pdflatex output) to change the orientation to landscape for certain pages.
add to the pramble:
\usepackage{pdflscape}
In the document, add in before and after the child document button in TeX
mode:
\begin{landscape}
[child document button]
\end{landscape}
If you don't have the pdflscape package installed, get it from ctan:
