Hi

I'm looking for a way to make a long equation span both columns in a double
column article. I've searched the mailing list and found two old threads
about this (see below).

A solution to the newer message was to: "After you have inserted the figure
float, set the cursor behind the word
'Figure' and choose 'standard' instead of 'caption' in the format menu."

I don't see Format menu and I could not find a way to remove word 'Figure'
The word "Figure" is part of the "caption" paragraph type. That
is why they tell you to change it to "standard" instead of "caption"

This is not done in the regular menu, where you indeed don't
have a "format" entry. I don't know exactly what lyx looks like
on windows (I use linux), but:

Under the menu there is a toolbar. The leftmost thing there
(on linux) is a dropdown combobox where you may select paragraph type.
Surely you must have used it, it is the thing that lets you set
"section", "subsection", "enumeration", "title" and a lot of other very
common paragraph types. It also have "caption" (which only works
inside floats) and "standard" which is used for all normal text.

Most floats have a label, that's why they are created with
a caption environment inside. When you don't need that,
just change it to standard, and you'll loose the "Figure" word.

Windows lyx may look slightly different from linux lyx, but
the combobox for changing paragraph types is there. Lyx
is almost useless without that one. Find it and use it.
in Lyx 1.4.2 WinXP. Is there another way of doing this? A footnote
spanning
two column and having no footnote counter would do also, but I don't know
how to do that either.
No need for a footnote, or researching other ways. Changing
from "caption" to "standard" is supposed to be real easy.
If you can't find the combobox, post a screenshot and we'll point
it out for you.
