I don't like it either to be honest. To give you some background, a spammer was using some kind of script that uploaded repeatedly. The spam was basically files with comercials for various drugs etc. > It discourages users from adding new contents and kind of beats the > point of having a wiki. As a relatively simple solution, I could send out the password on this list now and then. Then we'll be safe until the spammers decide to look in the LyX archives. > People should be able to upload contents without having to subscribe to > mailing lists, and without the inevitable delay of human-moderation. > > From my (limited) experience, wiki spam can be reduced to harmless > levels by other means, such as CAPTCHA, mandatory login for uploads, and > automatic content filtering using regular expressions. CAPTCHA might be good, see below though. We already have mandatory login for uploads. (Actually, I thought you were complaining about that as this is why you need a password?) Could you expand on what you mean by automatic content filtering? Something like this is done for wiki pages, but not uploads and would require additional software. If you give me explicit suggestions for how to implement any of these suggestions I'll be happy to try them. I think that a CAPTCHA might work well. However, there is a slight problem here as the wiki server actually uses a separate software (Invision Power File Manager). That software is no longer developed (or available for download), and the source (PHP) isn't very documented. Frankly, I have no idea how to integrate a CAPTCHA with that software. If you have good experience with some file manager that has good 'anti-spam' support and similar functionality, we could try that instead. best regards /Christian -- Christian Ridderström, +46-8-768 39 44 http://www.md.kth.se/~chr
