Finally I found the problem :
If you insert a Title without an Author you got automatically the reported
error.
if you just insert an Author name then you got undefined control sequence
identified with the Author.
As soon as you put both then there is no more problem and you can
display, add what you wan in accentuation, using English or French ...
I was unable to reproduce this, although I did get some odd behavior
from LyX. We Americans are famously monolingual, and I had a hard time
convincing LyX I really wanted a document to be in French: the first
time I tried, it set the language options to French and English and
entered text in English mode; and the second time I tried, it switched
the language setting from French to English on its own. Eventually I
was able to create a trivial test document with the class set to article
(AMS) and the language set exclusively to French. I put in a title but
no author, then some text with a page break, and encountered no
problems. I did not use accents, though.
My guess is that there is something in your text that is pertinent to
the problem. If you have a small document that demonstrates the
problem, I would be interested to look at it. If you cannot post it to
the list, perhaps you could mail it to rubin AT msu DOT edu.
