I've downloaded and installed Lyx 1.4.3-5 for Windows XP, and I've tried running
it for the first time, but I'm getting the lengthy error message:...

LyXTextClassList::Read: unable to find textclass file `'. Exiting.

This is a known LyX bug that may sometimes occur. Workaround:

---

LyX might not start after the installation when the internet connection was closed
while the installation (see LyX's bug #2829)
Workaround: delete the files "textclass.lst" and "packages.lst" in the folder
   ~:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\LyX1.4.x
   and restart LyX

---

If this doesn't help try to install LyX using this installer:

Uwe,

I don't think there will be files in
~:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\LyX1.4.x (in fact, I don't think that directory will exist). From the error messages in the original post, I think that if anything they will be under C:\Windows. Unless the version of LyX in your installer works with UNC paths (I'm guessing it does not), switching installers probably will not help either.
