What does not work in 1.4.x (but will work in 1.5.0) is copying ÿ from other sources, e.g. this post.
I thought that too but last week i was really surprised about the following:at least in lyx 1.4.2 and 1.4.3 on Winxp you can paste the contents of the windows clipboard by pressing the middle mouse button in lyx! thist works for ÿ, too.
