I am running lyx on windows XP. When I try to fill in the preamble lyx crashes

Is there a way I can use the preamble?

As Nicolás wrote, it would be good to know which version of LyX you are running.

You might try the following. Open a DOS windows and cd to the LyX bin directory. Run 'lyxc -dbg any'. Sit back with your choice of adult beverage and watch several megabytes of debugging messages scroll past. (The 'any' option is rather indiscriminate, but there's nothing in the symptoms that suggests a more specific choice.)

Once LyX is done opening, create a new document and go to (but do not yet type in) the preamble. Note the last few lines of text in the DOS window; we're interested in what follows. Now type something that crashes LyX, note down or copy whatever new messages show up in the DOS window, and see if they suggest anything. (Feel free to post them here.)

There is no guarantee this will illuminate the problem, but I think it's worth a shot.
