I've now found a more LyX like way of doing Enrico's format. I start by
properly creating the AMS array:

* Insert->Math->AMS Insert environment
* Edit->Rows & Columns->Add column
* Edit->Rows & Columns->Add column

Now I have the proper array. Next I fill it in:
Column 1: a
Column 2: =b
Column 3: leave blank
Column 4: \qquad\text This is my explanation

To add another line I get past column 4 (I've programmed Alt+M to do that),
and then press Ctrl+Enter and fill in the next four columns the same as the
previous.

I'll need to decide whether to type em in in LaTeX and then Ctrl+M, or to
perform the preceding procedure in LyX. Either way, it looks like it works
well and conforms well to the LyX environment and philosophy.
