And that brings up an important point. The LyX letter template should ask for 
a date. The way it is now, if you don't ERT in \date{whatever you want}, the 
date on the output is the date of conversion to postscript. Given that most 
letters are sent for legal purposes, it is VERY bad to have the date change 
as you print it on different days.

Now that LyX has character styles, the date can be included in the template as 
text in a character style, and the associated LaTeX command simply does 
\date{#1}.
