In LyX >= 1.5.0 try "File->New Window".
But it's not possible to have two Windows side by side in one LyX
instance, right?
Wrong, "File->New Window" will give you two windows in the same LyX
instance. What you cannot have (yet) is two work areas in the same
window; but you can of course resize the windows and position them to be
side by side.
