What's strange though is that I did a full uninstall through Synaptic,
including "configuration files"....so configure shouldn't be picking up old Lyx
installation files, right?

Typing 'lyx -sysdir /usr/local/share/lyx' doesn't change the behavior; I still
get a blank document with no toolbars.

And by the way, you won't have a Resources folder on Linux. It's just
$datadir/lyx, where $datadir is set by ./configure and defaults to
$PREFIX/share. Here's mine:

[EMAIL PROTECTED] lyx15]$ ls /usr/local/share/lyx
bind CREDITS fonts lyx2lyx tex
chkconfig.ltx doc images scripts ui
configure.py encodings kbd symbols unicodesymbols
configure.pyc examples languages syntax.default
configure.pyo external_templates layouts templates

As I said, though, I suspect your problem is an old version of LyX in
/usr/share, and that LyX is finding those libraries when it starts, and
is choking.
