Yes, it must be something with ImageMagick, as converting .xpm or .gif files from command line with "convert" doesn't work either.
It produces the following command line comment:
convert: no decode delegate for this image format `gtk.xpm'

It seems that there is no code delegate for at least the .xpm and .gif formats. What can I do about this?

As I said, you might try uninstalling and reinstalling MacTeX. Another possibility would be to install ImageMagick on its own, though macports, e.g.

I tried uninstalling an reinstalling MacTeX. That didn't change a thing though. I'll try and contact the ImageMagick mailing list to see if they can help.
