I HIGHLY recommend the latter suggestion. I've found that every book's
frontmatter is a one-off project not requiring consistency, and therefore is
best done with fine-tuning, ERT and custom made environments, rather than
accepting what the document class can do or modifying the document class. To
me, the document class should be used for mainmatter, where consistency is
essential.
