Thanks for the quick reply. I created a brand new document, set the doc class to "book" and set it as a double sided doc; then gave it a title and author and copied in a few pages of text. The bad behavior appeared (that is, large margins on the right on odd numbered pages, large margins on the left on even numbered pages). If I *manually* set the inner margin large and outer margin small then the pages are properly typeset ...
