The problem is that biblatex does not find your bib-file and thus prints the cite key. You can solve the problem in two ways: 1. give a full path in the \bibliography command in preamble or 2. put your bib file in your texmf tree (on the Mac: ~/Library/texmf/bibtex/bib/example.bib) I would recommend option 2.
