I don't subscribe to the developer's mail list, but I know that you'll see this suggestion here.
I'm using version 1.5.3, but this may have been present for a while. The File->Import filter for text files looks explicitly for files with a .txt extension. Why be so restrictive? Change the dialog box display filter to *.* and we can open a text file regardless of extension -- even if there is no extension. I don't see a reason to not do this, but the benefits are present.
