In LyX 1.5.3, open the User's Guide from the Help menu and use Find with
"short title" to be directed here:

3.3.4.4 Short Titles of Headings

Some section or chapter titles, such as this one, can get quite long. This
can cause troubles when there is limited horizontal space. For example, if
the header of the page is set to show the current section title, a long
title will protrude over the page margins and look awful.

LaTeX allows you to specify a short title for section headings. This short
title is used in the header and in the actual table of contents, avoiding
the problem mentioned. To specify a short title, use the menu Insert -->
Short Title. This will insert a box labeled ``opt'' (stands for
``optional'') which you can use to enter the short title text. This also
works for captions inside floats.
