I created an 8.5" x 8.5" book recently using latex direclty (not LyX). I simply used the geometry package and everything worked fine. xpdf showed it with the right size (not scaled to A4) and the book came out perfectly when I got it printed by lulu.com. My output was prepared for two sided printing (page numbers, in particular, alternated sides from page to page as I expected as did the margins). How are you actually specifying the size? Have you looked at the latex code? cheers, eric
