On a somewhat related note, I've done the same thing and gotten weird
behavior. It happened on three different machines with LyX 1.5.3 - 1.5.5,
WinXP.

I move the toolbars to be on the right and vertical, but each time I open
LyX they show up in different places. They stay on the right, but seem to
switch order at random (nearest the document to farthest from it). I wonder
why they don't "stay put."
