I yesterday tried to reproduce the problem by installing LyX from scratch and without an existing MiKTeX on different PCs - it worked fine in all cases: MiKTeX never hang up at any package.
Note that the check for packages is a MiKTeX thing and not a LyX one. regards Uwe
