Well, "elegant" is in the eye of the beholder. You can try to put
something like
\let\hreforig\href
\def\foo#1://#2=={#1:/\hspace{-0.8ex}/#2}
\def\href#1#2{\hreforig{#1}{\foo#2==}}
in to the preamble and use the hyperref insets as usual.
