Thanks, Siegfried. The problem with your approach is that for long
text boxes, the text does not get justified, unlike with text inside
minipages. I think LyX should have an option (for the user) to
selected the color of box around the minipage.

Just a side remark: \fcolorbox also works with the package xcolor.
